A.R.H. Family Shiraz Cabernet Merlot (2009)

A wonderful weekend and lovely Saturday night. I am listening to “my” football team on the radio and hoping for a big win.

We both worked hard around the house today and completed many chores on our to-do list. Now, a well-deserved relaxing evening.

This A.R.H. Family Shiraz Cabernet Merlot 2009 is our choice for a cozy fall evening. This is rich in plum flavors with a tobacco finish. This goes well with out dinner of ground turkey/black bean/pasta which I served with fresh sauteed spinach and some homemade baked beans.

H.J. Fabre Malbec (2009)

We chose this Argentine H. J. Fabre Malbec 2009 for Thursday evening cocktail hour. I have been so incredibly busy at work that I have been rather brain dead in the evenings and unwilling to blog even though we have had some lovely wines and meals this week. Tonight, however, i am going to blog. I am inspired because we received several lovely comments. Very motivating!

Tonight we have decided on pizza to give me a break. Even though i find preparing meals enjoyable and relaxing, tonight I just needed to sit in my chair and read the newspaper!

This Malbec is hearty and spicy. This is the perfect choice for pizza. The nose is delectable chocolate with hints of vanilla. The taste is rich with plums and oak. This would be a good choice to swerve with beef, too. Yum. Cheers!

Chateau La Rose Saint Bonnet Medoc (2009)

This Chateau La Rose Saint Bonnet Medoc 2009 is a luscious French red wine.

Although it probably is more of a steak wine, we had it with our dinner of roast chicken.

In hindsight it was probably too big of wine to have with chicken, but nonetheless i enjoyed it. Lots of ripe berries, oak and spice with a touch of tobacco on the finish.

For dinner, we had a roast chicken, cole slaw (if anyone wants my super-delicious, easy recipe, let me know; it’s tangy, crunchy and delicious), and angel hair pasta tossed with olive oil.

Sterling Vintner’s Collection Meritage (2007)

It is Sunday evening and we have had the most beautiful autumn weather. I am in shorts and t-shirt! For us northerners, this is a big deal for October. Tom spent most of the day finishing staining our pergola in the back yard. What a happy day to have that finished. I did laundry, grocery shopping and cooking, plus I took some short bike rides to enjoy the pretty leaves, the fragrant air and the warm temperature. Now we are relaxing. We worked on the Friday Wall Street Journal crossword puzzle and made some progress.

Our dinner tonight is a chicken pot pie that I started cooking much earlier in the day. I purchased some inexpensive chicken (leg quarters) and stewed those this afternoon. Then I deboned and skinned the cooked chicken for my pot pie. I started by sauteing onions, celery, carrots and chunked (unpeeled) red potatoes in butter for about 10 minutes. I added flour and mixed well and added chicken broth and evaporated milk until thick and creamy, threw in the cooked chicken, salt and pepper and put in a casserole and covered with pie crust to bake for an hour.

Our upstairs stash of wine is dwindling so i went to the basement to get this Sterling Vintner’s Collection Meritage 2007. I don’t want to sound overly effusive but this is DELICIOUS!! I really love this. This combination of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot is just what i adore in a wine . . .chocolate, cherry, vanilla. . .but not sweet, just fruity and totally inviting and sumptuous.

Robert Mondavi Meritage (2008)

Here we are nearly at the end of our work week. It has been one week since my knee surgery and I am doing really well. I am not using crutches at all and I did some yoga during my noon hour. Can’t wait to run!

This Robert Mondavi Meritage 2008 is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. Tom bought this today when he went to the grocery store for orange juice. (Tom is very good at checking out the wines when he stops at the market.) We are both enjoying this one veery much. It was $12 on sale for $10. It is complex with layers . . . on the palate is abundant dark fruit while the finish is a lovely combination of raspberries and blueberries. This is unusual but we don’t detect vanilla or caramel or spice. Just berries. Very pleasant and I would definitely purchase this again.

For dinner, I am making a dish that is both comforting and healthy. Our food co op started up this week so i needed to incorporate some of my healthy organic vegetables. First, I browned a pound of ground beef that is from a local cow! Wow. What a difference. Ground beef from a local farmer is so different than what you buy in a store. I added some chopped onion and celery and carrots (all from the co-op) and then added canned chopped tomatoes. After that simmered for awhile, I added chicken broth, fresh spinach and some elbow macaroni. And I am cooking some fresh beets. We should get our prescribed servings of vegetables.

All on all, a great cocktail hour and a delicious dinner.

Melanto Terrace Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

We are having a glass of this for our Tuesday night. It is delicious.

For dinner I made a stir fry. I sauteed onions and green pepper in olive oil and then added chunks of sirloin steak (from a local farmer). When the steak was brown, I added a large amount of fresh spinach and some chopped, fresh tomato. I tossed this with angel hair pasta and olive oil. Delish!

This wine is fruity with a finish of cherries, vanilla, and licorice.

Guenoc Cabernet Sauvignon (2007)

Happy Sunday! It has been awhile since we have blogged but I am hoping you will see why from this picture. I had to have knee surgery this last week to repair a torn medial meniscus. This has thrown our cocktail hours into a bit of disarray. But, I feel that after three days I am on the mend and quickly resuming my lifestyle. I am still on crutches but I get around pretty well, if I do say so myself.

Because I had limited mobility this weekend, we decided it was a good opportunity to take the 4-hour drive north to visit my parents. As always, a very fun visit with these two robust lovebirds. A quick trip up on Saturday and back on Sunday and now we are relaxing in front of a dark-pink sunset and 50-degree temperature this October evening.

For dinner, I hobbled around the kitchen and put together a white-bean, chicken chili supper. I drove to our local market and purchased a whole-wheat baguette to have with our soup. This will really hit the spot because we both feel the chill tonight. I made this soup simply: I sauteed chopped onions and garlic, added cumin, salt and pepper, then added chopped, boneless, skinless chicken breast and browned everything. Then I added some green chilis, fresh-squeezed lime, chicken broth, and three cans of white beans and shoe-peg corn to simmer. It smells great.

Tom chose this wine because he wanted something big to go with our soup. The nose is rich with blackberry. The palate is musky with hints of clove and spice. The mouth feel is soft and lush with a robust finish of raisins, chocolate, and spice.

I purchased this wine for $13.99 at one of our favorite local wine shops, A & L Wine Castle. They generally don’t let me buy anything that we won’t enjoy. Nice job, A&L.
